Perfect for the holidays! With just two half-yard cuts of two patterns, I sewed them right sides together and used a CD to make the curved corners. Once I turned it right side out, and ironed it, I top-stitched the edge.

Use a pattern you like for the Fall and another for Winter and have a pretty table both seasons. I've made another for a hostess gift.

Mostly, I make things with fabric. However, when I was a child, my grandfather had an amazing workshop and he was patient and generous enough to let me play with saws, nails, drills, and scraps. I'm waxing sentimental because his tools and workshop were auctioned last weekend. Sweet man that he is, he saved the first hammer he used when he began his career in construction for me. I have lovely items in my home that he made--a cedar chest and a grandfather clock. That hammer will be cherished as much as those heirlooms.

This humble shelf is nod to my Grandpa Vern. I only used a hammer and nails to make it, but I summoned his words and lessons to do it. If your little person needs some wall storage, this is a super simple project.

You need: five yard sticks (or the appropriate number to cover the dimensions of the supports you choose); two pre-cut shelf supports from your favorite home improvement store (or cut them yourself if you have a jigsaw); and nail the yard sticks to the supports. For under ten dollars, you'll have a great shelf you made for your kiddo.

I'm still trying to summon sunshine in the Pacific Northwest. A new little pillow is in process for the livingroom. My first attempt at a dresden plate is surprisingly easy. I think I'll have to make another. You can make your own template. Simply make a circle using a plate as your pattern. Once cut out, fold the paper in halfs, quarters, eights, sixteenths. . . depending upon the size petals you desire. Add the seam allowance to your piece and you have your pattern.

My sweet niece Britta married a man named David in the Bahamas this spring. The event was full of beautiful and happy! Though we sent a gift prior to the happy day, I wanted to make something for them, too.

These colors remind me of their wedding--sunny and seaside all in one. The yellow blocks are 17" and the sashing (small blocks) are 6" (measurements prior to construction). I hope they make a home for it in the car--take it to the lake, the cabin, the concert. . . let it be the backdrop for memories while they are out and about.

My kiddo's school hosts an art walk each spring to showcase the work the students are doing and local artists and crafters donate to the silent auction. I'm thinking a collection of reusable market bags might be a good addition to the auction. Which pattern would you like best?

In the Pacific Northwest we wait and wait for the sun to appear. I couldn't wait anymore, so I played with 2" blocks in sunshine colors. It is now by our front door so even when it is gray, we have some sunshine to greet us.

We've been so distracted with holidays, birthdays and wonderful family weddings that I haven't done much sewing. I have a few little knit bits to share--a really adorable baby hat for a new little one due any day, but I wanted to share some things on my "to do" list. They can choose fabrics for the books, they can draw and fold the flowers and they can choose their fabrics and colors for their placemats. I know the list seems short, but I don't want to over promise and under deliver. We made these without any pattern--just circles and free-handed petals and pinwheels. Give it a try if you like! Stitched, quilted and stuffed, this is the boy version of the Wee Wonderfuls Elf Stitchette. The girls are adorable, too! The kids got them early so they could be part of the holiday decorations. The photo of all three on the couch was fuzzy, but the boy alone turned out great. The one for the big girl in the house is very sweet and has her dark hair.

The one for the little girl is darling, too. It has her blonde hair. Many thanks to the designers who share their talents with us for free. I have purchased the some other embroidery patterns from Wee Wonderfuls and look forward to making those, too. Happy Holidays!

I do have a thing for toille. This Santa toille really stole my heart. Right now, it is hosting our gingerbread house, snow globe and Happy Santa on our console table. I did some simple line, organic quilting and put a white, winterberry print on the other side wo it will work for the holiday and through the winter, too. I completely cheated and used bias tape to bind it, but it turned out almost as well as if I'd spent the time making the binding myself. Sometimes, it is good enough for who it is for, as my friend, Nancy says.

So, I gave this a try. I enjoyed that I could try different patterns on small pieces--it alleviated the decision making and commitment phobia. Once I had quilted each square, I trimmed them as wonkily as I felt comfortable. I found this method easy to do and like that I learned which patterns I appreciate most. This is just a lap quilt, but I think it will make a nice gift.

Winter Banners

The weather people are forcasting a snowy winter in the Northwest. Who pretty snowflakes and lights that twinkle in the night? My kiddos and I made these little banners to welcome winter.

With two pieces of felt, scrap ric-rac, and felt stickers, these little banners came together easily.

The only sewing I did was to sew on the ric-rac which became the string for the lights. You could glue it on in advance and then let the kids get started. We're working on counting here, so they counted and sorted the different light stickers. We had 30 so they each got 15 (one pack from Joann's for $1.00). They divied up the colors that went best with their sensibilities and with their felt. Then they made their patterns. Once they had the designs ready, they pulled the adhesive and placed their lights along their strings.

I helped with the snowflakes because some of the felt stickers didn't cooperate with the intended die cut. Joann's has other stickers--gingerbread men and ladies, penguins, etc. You don't need kids to make this project fun. They would make great gifts for the holiday season, too!

What fun! Just in time for the snow in Seattle, my friend, Nancy, and I made pillow cases for our kiddos. She wanted to get it done last year, so I found a great tutorial. With my stash and what Nancy had, we made five cases while our youngest kiddos were at preshcool.

These would be great wrapping for larger gifts and were a happy surprise for the little people in our lives. Nancy is inspired to make them for other seasons, too.

Here is a fast one! With a wool remnant and one seam, I have a fall runner. . . something that can take us from September to Thanksgiving. A pretty flannel would work, or another plaid you like. These colors just seemed perfect for our house.

It is super simple. Fold your remnant in 1/2 with the selvadges on each end. Seam it and press. Easy, peasy, lemon-squeezy.

Thanksgiving Crafting with kids

With scraps of cotton, some felt stickers, acrylic paint and a sharpie marker, we now have a banners to remind us and welcome friends as we approach Thanksgiving.

I simply hemmed the scraps and created casings for dowels. I found a font I liked, enlarged it and then traced the word "thankful" onto the scraps. The kids painted the letters. I love the spots where they are outside the lines. Once the paint was dry, they chose the pattern order of the stickers and placed them. I had fun, tracing the letters in the brown Sharpie, to make the words pop.

This will soon be fluttering on our door. Find a a scrap, a font you like and some felt stickers. Or find some leaves, make crayon rubbings through the fabric or find fall colored scraps and have the kiddos make patterns with those.

Thankful for my little helpers.

Here is a gift, basted and ready to stitch. I made one of these in red for our home and my mother loved it. This year, she will receive this one as a Thanksgiving gift. The colors are more in keeping with her delicate, victorian sensibilities. Oh, I hope she loves it. You could easily make one of these before the holidays for yourself or for someone you love. Visit Gail Pan at her blog for the "A Christmas Wish" patterns and just stitch a block each night. The panels come together so quickly. You could even do a four-block version and choose your favorite words. Use your favorite colors and keep it up all year, if you like. I made all three of our kiddos quilts last Christmas. This was for the big girl in the house. She is my step-daughter and it makes me incredibly happy to see her wrapped up in it on weekend mornings or while she does her homework. It is simple. . . but started the redecorating in her room. I just love that she uses it.

This little halter has served our Sugar Lump well. She wore it as a dress over a onesie as a toddler and now as a tunic as a bigger girl. I used this basic pattern: Katja and modified it to make it longer and add the eyelets and a-line. I knit the ties in garter rather than i-cord. Oh, I also knit it in the round, but you could easily seam it as the pattern suggests. It was asuper fun way to use up some stash scraps!

I know Elsie Marley is doing a make a pattern for kiddos and share it this week. I don't have that in me. But I did have time to remove the cuffs from this button-down. One had torn loose from the sleeve in some sort of tree climbing adventure. By adding a bit of trim where the cuffs had been, a little pleated skirt to the bottom of the shirt, a sweet pocket on the front, and some cotton twill ties to give it shape, Our little Sugar Lump has a new dress for cool spring days or for this fall.

It was fun to play again. I hope you're playing, too.

Tulips Galore

Planning Ahead

Nothing like a wedding shower, to get me motivated. It had me thinking about a wedding that is coming in July. . . and then Christmas in July. Here is the quilt top that I finished. I used only what I had on hand. . . some pretty fat quarters that I quartered and some muslin for sashing. Now, if I can get it sandwiched, quilted and bound by July, I'll have really done something.

Live has created radio silence here. My hand rehabilitation, the kiddos ages, and now spring. I'll be back eventually. For now, it will be sporatic. Hope you're enjoying the spring!

Though I showed this as a WIP, I thought I'd sahre it finished and washed. The big girl in our house liked it. Setting the charms on their pretty diamond points was a fun new experience for me. I would definitely make another like it. Hope you are keeping cozy. We're still in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and so glad we'll see the temperature rise above zero. Now the kiddos can get outside to sled and play in the snow.

Our sweet little Sugar Lump tried to eat the gingerbread house. While visiting, our little guy and Sug made the house with Grandma Cookie's guidance. Apparently, all the frosting goodness was too much temptation for her two year old tongue. She took a nibble off the front gable, well, a chunk.

For our big girl for Christmas. . . got the quilting done yesterday and now need to bind it. Can't wait for her to see it. The charms are from Joann's and I used some black swirl I had on hand. . . and of course the back and white cotton. Love the patterns and think I will quilt it on the diagonal to support that pattern. When I finish, I'll post the whole thing. Oh, how I love presents:).

I love all the bright colors in this one and how the white blocks and the linen border showcase all the hues. How to quilt it though? I had some scraps left from Candyland Christmas so I thought I would try a large version of my tree block. It turned into a nice lap quilt. I freehanded the little snowflakes that quilt the white space. They do the job, but I'm not sure I'm in love with it. More practice would solve the problem, I'm sure.

As if I needed this distraction. With a pile of projects to finish, I played in th middle of the night. These little houses are cute, but I have no idea where they will live. Why they were so important to make when I have quilting and binding on four big projects left to do, I'm not sure. When I get those bigger pieces finished, I'll show you them. For now, these little houses and the tree that needs trimming downstairs are making me quite happy. Hope you're making things that bring you some extra joy.

Orange Flower Sketchbook provides all varieties of crafting inspiration. This oversized cowel is based upon her simple ribbed cowel. My sweet mother was kind enough to model for me. I think our big girlie will enjoy this for Christmas. Now, if I can just get her quilt top and back ironed, sandwiched, quilted and bound. Ahhh. If that were the only project on the list.

This cowel was super easy! Using a #15 needle, I cast on 80 stiches. I followed OFS's stitch pattern---knit three, pearl through the back stitch one and repeat. I did knit it in circular, but you could knit it flat and seam it as easily.

A Fun Kiddo Winter Banner

Living in the Pacific Northwest, having some extra little projects for the kids is super helpful on our rainy days. I purchase little things as I find them and then plot how the kids can use them. I sewed two little muslin banners--really just finished the edges and made a pocket that would hold a piece of wood to stabilize the banner. I let the kids choose the felt stickers and arrange them as they liked on their banners. Then they went to work peeling the adhesive and placing their snowflakes.

The felt stickers make the banners look so pretty and more complex than the work the kids did. They were both proud. One is hanging and one is ready to send to grandparents as a gift. If you need some rainy day fun, this project might just fit for your family.

The last item that I sketched and stitched for the livingroom. I think I'm done for a while in there. With tjust three stitches, stem, back-stitch and french knot, this came together quickly, dispite the size--it is a rather long pillow. Again, I encourage you to sketch your own images and stitch them. You might be surprised by how well you like them.

I love this. I mean, I LOVE this. Somewhere as I stitched, I had a notion that it would be a gift. Now, I believe it will be a gift to me:). My husband says I never make anything for myself, but this time, I did.

If you haven't seen her work, you can find her here. What a sweet thing to offer up free stitchies for us. The flicker pool for this project is pretty amazing--many different interpretations.

You could completely get this pretty quilt done by the holidays. . . just keep that stitching in your bag as you do your errands and then suddenly, you are here--all done and hanging so sweetly. Happy Holidays, a little early. I have a wall hanging idea for the little kiddos to do. . . I'll get that posted soon.

Cheater Chargers--A tutorial

My mother and Sister-in-law always set beautiful tables. They have a vareity of table linens, decorations, candles, etc. Since this is definitely not the season for additonal expenses for table decor, I wanted to inexpensively add some color to go under my pretty dishes. Off to the closet I went and found a remnant of quilted holiday happiness. With stripes on one side and pretty trees on the other, I got to work. You won't believe how fast these went together.

First, I cut 13 inch circles.

Second, I pinned and sewed the bias tape around the perimeter.

Third, by folding back the raw edge and sewing to the end, the charger is finished.

The fun part is that they are reversible. You can quickly make these! I made our six from cutting to finish in an hour (while addressing the needs of my kiddos). This is a fun idea for the holidays--you could quilt your own and have one side be for fall/Thanksgiving and the other side be for winter/Christmas/Hannakah. I'm thinking we might need these for birthdays, too. They also work as trivets.

Some Holiday Sewing

With the help of some Figgy Pudding and a free embroidery pattern from Gail Pan, I finished up these two projects. Both items are bound to be gifts--so, shhh, please keep my secret. I just had so much fun with the Figgy Pudding patterns and love how the uncut courduroy adds some warmth and richness to the pillow. I have a whole list of things I've got in progress for friends and family. It seems quite possible that I've bitten off more than I can chew. I have a couple more pillows, a wall hanging, some mittens, a couple of quilts. . . maybe some more. We'll see how ambitious I am.

Finally

Since my honey got me a memory card with an extraordinary amount of memory for my camera, I have waited too long to get my photos onto the computer. Here are two of the simple quilts I made last spring.

The one for my Dad is done in quilter cottons and pillow cases. I chose the toile because it reminded me of his farm--the sheep, the trees:). It was the first time I dropped the feed dogs and did any free-motion quilting. I need loads of practice, but I thought I could try on the toile trees and the stitching is doing the job stitching does. Is it beautiful? No, but it hides nicely in the foliage:).

The other is the one I entered in Park City Girl's quilt festival--now you can see both sides in-full. I so love the colors and designs in this Hello Betty! I love the big blocks, too.

My Fabulous Sister-in-Law

More than once, I've mentioned that my brother's wife is an amazing designer. She works as a stationery designer, though she has designed packaging and signage. She could just as easily design interiors, textiles and re-organize your life. I admire her skills and her penchant for order. The company for which she works has a little retail store. If you're in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area (or even if you're not--they are on-line) the store is full of paper fun! So many fun gift items and all the perfect things to create invites, love notes, thank yous, etc. If you are thinking about holiday parties or gifties, click on their logo above, or of course, you would walk into the store on Main in Stillwater, Minnesota.

Admittedly, I'm a quilting novice. You may, very well, find an easier way to do what I've done. These were my steps and I hope you find them helpful. Though still not complete, I wanted to share where it is as it comes together. Please excuse the wonkiness of the photo--my little boy did his best:). Gail Pan was kind enough to share her designs. I finished mine a little smaller so it could hang on our wall. I'm just so happy with how it is coming together. The sashing is red print I had left from Candyland Christmas. Each block stiches up very quickly. You could make one as a pillow for your home or a gift, or you could make just your four favorites and create a smaller wall hanging. I'm looking forward to quilting and binding this one.

Park City Girl is hosting her second on-line quilt festival. I've been enjoying the work others do and commenting--mostly thanking them for inspiration. Then I thought, I'll help some newcomer feel good. This big block of Hello Betty by Moda is what I sent along for my sister-in-law's birthday. It was simple--use a layer cake to border a big cut of a favorite pattern and you're almost done. The other side has a center made of layer cake blocks and is bordered by brown. What I love is that it is on her couch in her livingroom.

This was my second quilt. I love that while I was basting it, my daughter found a marker and left her own little impression. Quilting has taught me to embrace imperfections. I'm certain, many manage the perfection required of the intricate patterns, but I'm better with the charm or the strip. I do my best and I make it with love. I know my mother would be tearing out pieces that I let stay. Her work would be perfect. Her quilts would be amazing. My quilts are the best I can do right now.

Fake Applique Pillow or Is a Fat Quarter Considered a Scrap?

Last week I noticed a tear in one of our familyroom accent pillows. It was an Ikea cover we've had for a few years, and though I still liked it, I was ready for something new. I had purchased a fat quarter of something yummy and thought--yes, this could work out there. Here is what I did.

Cut an 18" square of the fat quarter and the cotton batting scrap I had on hand.

Pin baste the fabric to the batting.

Using my walking foot, I outlined each circle.

With quilting the pillow front complete, I cut two 11" x 18" uncut courduroy pieces from scrap. I finished the long enge of piece by double-folding a 1/2" and sewing with a straight stitch. On the other, I attached the balance of the fat quarter so the back of the pillow would have some to the front design. I finished the edge of the patterned piece in the same way--double-folding 1/2" and sewing with a straight stitch.

By placing the latter piece right-side together with the quilted piece and the other back piece overlapping the first piece, you can make a pocket pillow cover. Now pin all items in place. Sew the perimeter of the cover together. I double-stitched the overlapping back pieces to provide more stability. Turn the right-side out and insert a pillow. WE LOVE THIS! I think I need to make two more:).

Somehow I developed a special love for bookmarks. I don't have a collection or anything like that. Still, I admire them. Certainly, it stems from I know Anna Maria Horner shows a wonderful way to make bookmarks that have embroidered borders. If your scraps are bigger than mine, her tutorial is wonderful.

To make mine, you'll need scraps that are between 4 an 5 inches wide. Sew them together into a length that suits a bookmark. If you have big hard cover books, longer is great. If you have smaller paperbacks, shorter is better. Add to the scraps, a piece of stiff interfacing and a piece of ribbon if you like. Now let's put it together.

1. Cut your scraps to size.

2. Seam your scraps together.

3. Fold in half, match seams and sew the the length.

4. Turn your tube right-side out.

5. Cut interfacing to fit your tube size.

6. Insert into tube and cut to size so you can finish the ends.

7. Add a ribbon, if you like, by cutting a length, folding it in half and pinning it inside the top of the tube with 1/4 inch turned in to finish the edge. Turn the bottom edge in 1/4 inch to finish that edge.
Sew around the permimeter of the bookmark to finish it.

You can make a pile of these quickly and they are great gifts or additions to book gifts.

Stem Stiching and French Knots

While at Paper Zone, I saw a stamp that I just loved. My mother had always had a thing or Queen Anne's Lace. The stamp reminded me of that sweet cluster of flowers. When I got home, I sketched up three stems on some tea stained muslin I had. With a stem stitch and so many french knots, I didn't count, I had this sweet pillow for my living room.

If you feel drawn to something, please feel confident in your ability to sketch it and make it.

Figgy Pudding by Moda Fun

The colors in the Moda's Figgy Pudding line are rich and warm. With a charm pack in hand, I just had to play. I'll write up a little pattern for this soon, but for now, here is a look at a WIP. The charms are in the middle with some red sashing as ribbon for the gift. White, brown and one of the Figgy Pudding prints make the borders for it. We'll see how quickly I work, but maybe it will be done by next week. The "get ready for holiday giving bug" has definitely bit me. Making things for those I love is so joyful. With the chilly are now here in the Northwest, time inside seems much more reasonable.

It has been done for a while, I just didn't get a photo together. My sweet mother and father were here helping me this week. Mom was kind enough to help me get a photo. Thanks to Crazy Mama Quilts for this inspiration. I would definitely make another one. Just a little at a time. . . and it came together so quickly. It really motivated me to try some more quilting techniques. I hope the rest of you are getting ready for fall. We've planted most of the bulbs, done the pruning and are getting ready for nights by the fire pit. Who doesn't love sweatshirt weather with a warm fire?

Knitting and Sewing. . . in Preparation

Since as of next Monday, I'll be on waivers as far as any right hand use is concerned, I've been wrapping up some projects. I've finished a blanket and a quilt (photos to follow this week) and have knit up a variety of things for little people I love.

Here is our Sugar Lump in one of the hats. I'm an impatient knitter, so I worked up this little hat with chunky yarn, size 11 needles and a twisted drop stitch. Super fast! I find the larger needles bother my hands less, too.

I'm hoping to get my Gail Pan Bom last block stitched this week and get a couple more things made. I'll get some photos up for fun. Hope you enjoyed a nice holiday weekend and that you're ready to greet the fall.

I've ignored this problem for far too long. So she says, as she types. Today is the day to schedule the first surgery. I'm completely bummed that I'll be out of stitching, knitting comission for a while. First the right, then the left and hopefully all will be amazingly better. I guess I'll just have to admire things and dream of what I'll do later--when it will be easier:).

Vintage Daisies

A few years ago, I was shopping in an antique store in Eureka, Wisconsin--just outside a town called Luck. I found some yummy shoe clips and then was drawn to the linens. The little towel in the photo had to go home with me. Actually, it needed to make a home with my brother and his wife. My Sister-in-Law, the amazing designer I've mentioned before, had painted their powder room a yummy brown. I just knew this little piece would fit her sensibilities. It still lives in that room. I love that I was able to find something she would love. The color selections on this little towel are so modern and it is certainly at least fifty-years-old. Happy hand stitching.

While visiting my parents, I finally took a photo of my favorite hand-work my mother did while I was tiny. This hangs in their hallway, right outside my bedroom and links my memory to the lake house where mom stitched it and I was a wee one. A Variation on a Cocoon

Oh, how I wish I had a friend with a baby to cozy into this little bowl. So here is my version of the Baby Bowl. My photographer friend, Christine, was so sweet when she received these little knit goodies. This one works up super fast!

Materials:

1 skein of something soft and yummy

Size 11 16" circular needles

Yarn needle

Cast on 60 stitches loosely with your prefered method

Place stitch marker and join

Row 1: Knit all stitches

Row 2 - 6: Knit all stitches twisted drop stitch (tds)

Row 7: Knit 8, k2tog to end of round using tds

Row 8 - 12 Knit all stitches twisted drop stitch

Row 13: Knit 7, k2tog to end of round using tds

Row 14: Knit all stitches twisted drop stitch

Row 15: Knit 6, k2tog to end of round using tds

Row 16: Knit all stitches tds

Row 17: Knit 5, k2tog to end of round using tds

Row 18: Knit all stitches tds

Row 19: Knit 4, k2tog to end of round using tds

Row 20: Knit 3, k2tog to end of round using tds

Row 21: Knit 2, k2tog to end of round using tds

Row 22: Knit 1, k2tog to end of round using tds

Row 23: K2tog to end leaving you with six stitches remaining

Cut an 8" tail and thread it through the final six stitches.

Weave in ends and trim.

Baby Cocoon

Ah, summer. . . and I'm knitting. That may seem strange, but it is portable and lets me be outside keeping an eye on the kiddos. My friend, Christine, is an amazing photographer who showed me some of the props she had purchased for infant sessions. She told me she was coveting some of the cocoons she had seen, but not enjoying the prices. I thought I'd try to work one up for her and share the pattern with you all--just in case you have a newborn who might need to be extra cozy. I wish I had a baby to show you how sweet they can look in these little cozy, cocoons, but my babies are too big and I haven't yet talked my sister-in-law into having another.

Materials:

Size 11 16" circular needles

1 skein of yummy, soft yard you adore

A little time.

Cast on 35 stitches using the long-tail method

Place space marker and join.

Rows 1 - 5, knit in stockinette

Row 6, knit all with twisted drop stitch

Row 7, knit all rows

Repeat rows 6 and 7 until your cocoon measures 15"

Begin decrease on a knit row:

Row 1 Dec: k2 tog, k5 to end

Row 2 Dec: knit all with twisted drop stitch

Row 3 Dec: k2 tog, k4 to end

Row 4 Dec: knit all with twisted drop stitch

Row 5 Dec: k2 tog, k3 to end

Row 6 Dec: knit all with twisted drop stitch

Row 7 Dec: k2 tog, k2 to end

Row 8 Dec: knit all with twisted drop stitch

Row 9 Dec: knit 2 tog, k 1 to end

Cut a 10 " tail, and thread through remaining stitches.

Pie Beret

My Aunt Arleen is a pie baker. As a child, she would deliver any of her wonderful pies for our birthday gifts (my favorite was peach). The yumminess and the fact that it was all ours made those pies extra special. Of course, we shared. She saw me knitting up a cupcake for my niece's 1st birthday. She love it.

I thought her latest granddaughter should have a little cream pie hat. So this little beret is simple and fun. The ribbing is the crust and keeps it on the baby head while the top, fringe and flowers are the filling. I love it and hope she does, too. Now, will baby Grace keep it on her pretty little head?

Strip Quilt Complete

This was really fun! I decided to curve the corners. . . since it was so boxy everywhere else, and I machine bound it since my hands are just not handling small work these days. I am still not brave enough for the free-motion experiment. I'll try some smaller pieces and work up some confidence and skill. I do like the angles that hold the piece together. Quilt-a-longs are a great way for beginners, like me, to learn skills and practice with supervision:).

Crazy Nine-Patch. . . Now What?

I've been wanting to try the crazy block method that Allsorts lists as a tutorial on her blog. Since I had 10" blocks of Hello Betty left from the quilt I made, I thought they would be the perfect try at this. They are not perfect, but I like them. Another time I would definitely heed the suggestion to have all different solids/prints. I like that doubles appear on some blocks, but it made for some confusion as I pieced them together.

What should I do with them? Table Runner? Set of Placemats? Baby Quilt? Picnic Blanket? And how should they go together. . . butt them next to one another for a true crazy quilt and give them a big border? Sash them to show off each little crazy piece? Hmm. . .

Please, let me know if you try. I'd love to see how your blocks come out and what you make with them?

Clothes Pin Holder

My mother has had the same bag to hold her clothes pins since she got married, I suppose. It still does the job, but it is getting thread-bare. I thought it was time she had something new--something she could easily launder and still do the great job her old standby has done for over 45 years.

So I worked up this little bag for her. The pretty cotton is supported by scrap cotton canvas I had on hand. The hanger can be removed to launder the bag. Someday I'll figure out how to create those sexy pdf files everyone else shares. I have it in a word document and would willingly share the steps and dimensions with anyone interested in a similar useful item that encourages a green approach to the wash. It was really simple--took maybe 20 minutes to complete.

Mmm. . . the smell of sun-dried laundry. That is summer as much as fresh strawberries or the feel of sunshine on skin.

Bubble Wands for Summer

I don't know about your kiddos, but mine love bubbles. The tiny wands that come in the bottles work just fine, but I thought these might be more fun. Granted, they don't fit into the bottles, but with a nice, deep bowl of soap water, these wands are both functional and whimsical.

Materials: Thin dowels cut to 12" for little kiddos and 18" for bigger ones and a heavier wire. You see copper on mine because I had it on hand, but any heavy wire would work.

Have your kiddos choose a shape and if they are big enough, let them create it. If not, you make it for them and anchor it to the dowel by tightly wrapping the wire and. Be sure to use a small pliers to turn any sharp ends into soft curves and then go play. The coils on the dowels must be tight or excited waving might have your shapes flying across the yard. If you like, score the dowels to better anchor the coils. Enjoy your bubbles in the sunshine.

Quilting Along

Though I should be noodling what we're going to give Daddy for Father's day (he found one of the gifts in the boy's closet a month ago--rat-snackers!). I did some sewing over the weekend. The muted colors of the strip quilt go well with our livingroom, so it will live there. When my Bob saw it, he said, "Happy Father's Day to me," so I better get some batting and get to work.

The other is my nine-patch for the Crazy Mama Quilt's quilt-a-long. I used my recess charm squares and kona natural. I think Grandpa Vern will love it. . . just need to find the right backing. Hope you had great weather and a little creative fun over your weekend. Summer sure felt like it was here, though it doesn't arrive officially until this week.

Quilt-a-Long Number Two

Since I got the top of my 9-patch-a-day together. . . I decided I could use the quilt kit set my mother gave me for the Old Red Barn quilt along. Here are the stips, though they are sewn together now and awaiting an iron and cutting into blocks. They were easy to cut, though the garage floor is not the ideal location for rotary cutting. While the boy painted his latest invention, I knelt on the cement and cut. Well, my bones didn't enjoy the experience. Still, the strips went together easily once I decided upon the order. Now I can't wait to learn how they go together. I have half the number I will need for the full quilt, but as this was intended for the couch, not a bed, maybe half is just enough.

What I did with that Hello Betty

Back when it was cold and rainy, I shared these bright Hello Betty colors and got great suggestions for what to do. I decided to frame a simple 3 x 4 selection of the layer cake with some Kona brown. The reverse side is the binding print as the center rectangle framed by 5 x 6 piecing of the layer cake squares. I love the contrast and how both sides are "tops". I decided to do simple quilting (still not ready for stippling) and took the lead from the pattern. I just did rectangles at 4" intervals. Another time I think I might go simpler. . . just do big squres and a plain back--so easy and pretty. I have full shots of the quilt, but my spiffy camera has a broken spring on the memory card. So, off to the camera clinic we go. The photos of my dad's quilted blanket are on that camera, so I'll post those when back from the clinic.

Papa's birthday is this Sunday. We are happy to have him visiting for the week. The boy enjoyed writing Papa's name so I could embroider it on a handkerchief for a gift. We have other goodies, for Papa, but I think he will like this the best. Maybe I should save the blanket I'm making him for Christmas. The baby girl will sing "Happy to you" in her sweet 20-month-old voice and I bet we will get a good smile out of that old, German farmer. Happy Birthday, Pop!

If you'd like to make one, just do simple thin hem on the edges of a 12 or 13" piece of soft cotton. Get your child to write the name you need, trace with a window and stitch away. Simple and sweet.

When you live in the Pacific Northwest, the sunshine dictates the day's activities. Far too often, we are stuck inside, or we venture out fully clad in slickers, rain boots and our determination to make fun in puddles. When the sun shines, we play outside. Oh, now this I think I might be able to do--I wish the class was in my neighborhood and starting now, not back in March. It is the double wedding ring quilt done with machine piecing and machine applique onto foundation blocks. All the curvy stitching has made me adore this pattern and fear it.

Have any of you done this challenging piece in any way? I've seen a great poston Crafy Stylish about how to make a small one for a picnic basket. Maybe that is the way to go. I've seen many of Denyse Schmidt's Single Girl quilt, but I wanted to do something for a friend's wedding. I may chicken out and do something much easier.

A Read Full of Perspective for Parents

I don't spend very much time writing about my kiddos. I don't have photos on the blog of their sweet faces. Sometimes their hands appear. . . sometimes their backs. . . I know many have lovely postings with their whole families and I applaud that. The openness and bravery of that type of sharing doesn't quite fit my personality.

I have mentioned that quilting has taught me to deal with imperfection in my whole life. The above book, Mitten Strings for God, brings to light a similar perspective. It begs for attentiveness and simplicity in parening. It acknowledges that we do our best and get opportunities to do better when we fall. Maybe most parents have that securely in mind always, but I seem to lose hold of it. As I read it, it reminded me of the lessons of attentiveness Thornton Wilder's play "Our Town" provides. Emily of that play asks, "Do human beings ever realize life while they live it, every, every minute?" and the Stage Manager responds, "Saints and poets, maybe they do some." The writer, Kenison, suggests that our children will be stronger, happier and more fully themselves if we attend to them as Wilder's saints and poets attend to life.

My Last Project Improv Piece

This little blue and green number is what I sent. I had fun playing with the angles and the prints. Her project has created so many pretty quilts that will be auctioned for charity. I love that she let me play and help.

Some Embroidery Fun

A while ago, I posted a number of free block or the month projects. Here are four of the five blocks of Gail Pan's BOM. The suspense is a bit much for me to manage, but I've enjoyed making each and have the fifth ready to start. I haven't added teh sashing, though I have the material--just debating whether they should all be the same color or if I should use a variety. These dainty medallions, stitch up very quickly and other stitchers have made the pieces their own by varying the colors and the backgrounds.

I also stitched up her Christmas Gift. . . what do you think? Should it become a quilted wall hanging, a table runner, just a framed little bit?

Crazy Mom Quilts is hosting a 9-Patch, one-a-day to finish a lovely quilt this summer. I learned about it and then pondered whether I could be successful. Then I signed up and started. Well, one a day turned into 12 blocks yesterday and 14 today. I don't know if it was the guilt for being behind the group or my own OCD that prompted the progress. I swear I didn't neglect the rest of my life--kids were fed, clean, read to and entertained, two floors were scrubbed and loads of laundry were finished. Some days conspire to help get things done. I guess the last two days have been great! Here are some photos of my blocks in Linen and Moda Recess.

A Little Gift for Mom

My father, brother and I have schemed up a present we know my mother will adore. She will be surprised and enjoy it very much. Still, even when one receives a "big" gift, getting something thoughtful and small is also dear. In her Mother's Day card, she will get this little hanky. It was super easy and I free-handed the embroidery. If you want to make one for your mom or grandmother, just take two pieces of very soft cotton, embroider the motif(s) you choose, sew them right sides together, turn and top stitch. I used 12" x 12" material. Happy stitching and sewing!

Happy May Day

If my mother lived in your neighborhood, you'd find some of these goodies on your doorstep today. She is such a great baker and thoughtful friend. Her sugar cookie recipe is in my February archives, if you get a craving. She uses Martha's suggestions for flooding cookies (the type of frosting that makes a nice, solid surface--the center of the daisies you see), but does her own thing with icing, sprinkles, sugars and gumdrops rolled out and cut into tiny little yummies. May always brought trips into the forrest to find the sweet little mayflowers, trilliums and wild geraniums. My parents have 240 acres in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Go ahead, label me a Jack Pine Savage. I loved my childhood. We had freedom to explore. Spring meant flowers, frogs, baseball, lambs, calves, chicks, ducklings and mud.

She is also an amazing seamstress. This little dress was for my niece D. I intended to make it for her as an Easter gift. I cut the pretty Amy Bulter fabric, but knew I wouldn't get it done. Bless Mom for taking the pieces and making it. Of course, she had it done in time for Easter.

Oh, I've been making around here, too. I just need to get some photos loaded. I'll have fun things to share next week--plus something fun for you to stitch, if you like.

My children have been finding such pretty things in the grass. The boy holds a pink blossom from one of our cherry trees. I love it when the yard is full of blooms--apricots, cherries, pears, apples. I hope you are seeing the signs of renewal in your parts of the world.

A Beautiful Table

My sister-in-law is the queen of beautiful. She is a graphic designer and definitely has a passion for what she does. Here is a glimpse of her Easter table. We were 2200 miles away, as usual, still, I got to share in some of the day through photos. Cheers to Heather and her pretty ideas--damask placememats she designed and printed in black, white and yellow, a napkin of polka dots and a peep for fun and pop. Of course, she had flowers and bunny statues and wonderful food.

Sleeping Dollies and their Improv Blankets

These little dollies are on their way to our friends--the M4 Posse. I hope their girls enjoy their babies like my little girl does. It was fun to free-hand the pattern and the faces. Any ideas what they might be named? I'll have to check with the M's and see.

The blankets are project improv inspired. I love the pink windows with the birdies in them.

Child's Party Hat Tutorial

Just thought your kiddos might enjoy an enduring party hat. I think the photos in the slideshow will lead you through the process nicely.

Materials:

Medallion Fabric and Letter Fabric

Base Hat Fabric

Stiff Felt

Fusible Webbing

Elastic

Sewing Machine

Iron
Needle and Thread

1. You will cut the hat from a hat pattern. I could post one if that is helpful.

2. You will apply fusible webbing to the medallion, letter and the felt.

3. Decorate the base fabric with medallion and letter by ironing them fusible side down.

4. Machine applique.

5. Adhere base hat to felt with fusible and iron.

6. Cut opening for tab with rotary cutter.

7. Pin hat in place.

8. Thread elastic through side holes with large embroidery needle and tie elastic.

9. Sew hat together along tab and opening.

10. Party!

Hope for the M4 Posse

We have friends who are hitting one of those extended valleys in life. The mama is in the midst of breast cancer treatment. Their little ones are the same ages as our kiddos. They have the most amazing perspective and energy as they tread through this experience. Mama M has lost her hair and Daddy M has shaved his head. This piece of stitching and patchwork is my project improv that belongs to them. Mama M would tell you to do your monthly self-examinations. Please send some extra love and possitivity into the world for his little family. "Hope is a thing with feathers" as Emily Dickenson wrote.

A Play or Changing Mat for Baby Otto

A new little man is in the world and I had to make something for him. Otto is the babe of a former co-worker. He is sweet and has all kinds of dark hair just like his Mama. This little changing pad or play mat is what I made when Sew Mama Sew did their doll quilt sew along. I used some charm squares from Moda's Recess and some blue I had on hand from the panels on my boy's windows. I bound it with some remnant navy and blue cotton from Joann's. I added the ribbon so this would be easily portable. Stippling still seems to daunting, so I used my walking foot and just sewed diagonals over the squares. One of these days I'll get brave enough to stipple, I promise. This little bundle with a onesie from our favorite local coffee shop will find the baby this week.

A Birthday Tree

Our little boy turned four this month and he had one strong desire--to have a birthday tree. Off we went to Skye Nursery to find something that would fit the bill. He decided upon a Lemon Cypress. The staff at Skye was very kind and patient with him as they showed him different options. The tree will winter in our home and summer on the deck. It can grow to 9 feet and needs re-potting every two years. We decorated it with simple paper ornaments adorned with photos of his previous birthdays and their corresponding numbers. I'll show you how to make these with photos of the baby girl, soon. A birthday tree--just lovely.

Spring Stitching

Here is the little wall hanging I promised. It has the one of the little eggs, bunnies, and dollies that I sketched and shared. I guess I haven't shared the dollies, yet. If anyone wants to have them, just leave a comment and I'll post them. They were so fun to sketch and stitch. I have been doing so much of it lately. You see, my little girl is a climbing machine, so I can't sit at my sewing machine. Hand stitching is portable and permits the proper level of supervision for this busy little bee of mine. I've also sketched and stitched four seasons of a tree that I need to make a pillow or hanging of and share, too. If you'd like to see close-ups of the stitching, the egg, bunny and chick are with the postings that have the sketches. It was so fun and I can see them on ornaments and tea towels.

Mama Loves this Cuff

Jennifer at JCHandmade is a creative rock-star! Not only does she create the yummiest of things from vintage and new materials, but she also provides tutorials and patterns for her lovely creations. If you haven't visited her, you really should do so. I had seen her purchase some beautiful porcelain buttons and knew I had to have whatever she made that included them. I bought one of the cuffs you see above from her etsy store today. Maybe you need to do a little shopping for yourself or someone you love at her store, too.

New Dress for My Baby Girl

My mother is magical. With a couple of measurements gained by a phone call, a vintage pattern and a desire to make an Easter Dress, this is what my baby girl will get on Monday when Cookie and Papa fly in for a week-long visit. This dear little eyelet dress looks quite a bit like the one I made for my confirmation. Something tells me that is what my mother had in mind.

Free Spring Stitching Patterns

I caught the sketching bug last week. I just wanted to sketch some little spring items that I could embroider to make a wall hanging and maybe stitch some tea towels for my mother. You are welcome to use these sketches for personal embroidery. I wish the quality was better; sadly, I don't have software to create computer sketches. If you like them, just use transfer paper or a light box to copy the image onto your cotton or linen. When I have the wall hanging put together, I'll post a photo. Have fun!
